Why does it matter?
When search engines crawl the internet, they record any outbound links. In a nutshell, if you have more inbound links (other sites link to you), it appears that you are a credible source. This should be a good method to rank the bajillion websites out there, but there are malicious users that use this to their advantage. They create a kajillion fake SEO articles that link to a downstream article (possibly a customer).
